Passport Services

This section sets out the general requirements for Irish citizens who wish to obtain an Irish Passport.

Please note that the information below is intended as a guide only. For further information, please contact the Embassy. Please also ensure that you make your application for a passport with the Irish Embassy in your country of normal residence. For a full list of Irish Embassies, please click here.

Passport Watch

Due to considerable backlogs at the Passport Office in Dublin at present , we now recommend that applicants in Australia allow eight to ten weeks for their biometric passport to be produced.

If you need to travel in an emergency, we can issue a non-biometric passport with limited validity locally, at our discretion and on production of evidence of the need for emergency travel.

Validity of Passports

Infants (up to age 3) are issued with a 3 year passport.
Children aged 3-17 are issued with a 5 year passport.
Persons aged 18 and over are issued with a 10 year passport.
In certain cases (e.g. where a previous passport has been lost or stolen), the Passport Office may restrict the validity of a replacement passport.
