Making an appointment to attend the Passport Office Molesworth Street.

The Passport Service is pleased to announce that members of the public who are travelling in less than 10 working days will no longer be required to queue at the Passport Office, Molesworth Street, to lodge their application. Instead an appointment should be made by clicking here. The opening hours for appointments are from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

While persons travelling in more than 10 working days may avail of this appointment service they are advised that it is both quicker and cheaper to use the Passport Express service available from all Post Offices.

The Passport Service reminds members of the public that the cheapest and most efficient way to lodge a passport application is through Passport Express (a joint venture with An Post.)  Customers applying through passport express are given a commitment by the Passport Service that, where the application was properly completed, a passport will be produced within ten working days.

• Public counter in Dublin or Cork – standard 15 working day turnaround.
• Public counters should only be used by those who have immediate travel plans or a necessity to travel for reasons of family emergency.
• Out of hours services should only be used when travel is necessitated by an emergency such as the death or illness of a family member.

Guidance on travel documents for children born as a result of surrogacy arrangements entered into outside the State

The Passport Office, which is part of the Department of Foreign Affairs, issues passports to Irish citizens.

All Irish citizens are entitled to apply for an Irish passport. Services are provided by the Passport Offices in Dublin and Cork and by Irish Diplomatic and Consular Missions  overseas.

Passports are required for travel to all countries except the United Kingdom. (However, you should note that some airlines now require photo-ID for flights to the UK). With the exception of travel to the U.K., Irish citizens require a valid passport for travel to all other destinations in the E.U.

All EU citizens have the right to enter and reside in the territory of any other Member State of the Union for a period of up to three months simply by presenting a valid passport or national identity card: no other formality is required. Member States cannot set additional conditions concerning the minimum validity of duration of the identity card or passport.

Irish citizens travelling to destinations outside the EU are subject to the specific requirements of those countries for the entry of non-nationals into their territory and they should contact the relevant Embassy of those countries before they travel for the most up-to-date information on these requirements.

Validity of Passports

Infants (up to age 3) are issued with a 3 year passport. 
Children aged 3-17 are issued with a 5 year passport. 
Persons aged 18 and over are issued with a 10 year passport. 
In certain cases (e.g. where a previous passport has been lost or stolen), the Passport Office may restrict the validity of a replacement passport.

Please note  that out of normal office hours the Duty Officer can only issue passports in exceptional circumstances such as emergency medical treatment for the applicant him/herself, serious illness or the death abroad of a family member .
